now what??

my car is starting to fail Dave's Big Butt test. what do i need to look for, and what are my options?

You mean, Dave's big butt test?? Look for rust at underneath the battery tray (do you have one?), the passenger's side jacking post,engine shelf and all that is underneath that..for starters..pull off the rockers and check there too..

Either acid/water can travel down the engine shelf and into the longitudinals, or the water drains clog on both sides and the longs get rusty. Most likely this is the weak point.

Option 1. Not pretty, if you live in CA scrap the car and transfer over to a rust free chassis. Of coarse if you lived in CA there wouldn't be rust.

Option 2. Talk to Brad Meryer (sp?) he makes a repair kit for about $300 that welds OVER the rusty longs. About fool proof as it gets, there is a tech article either on this site or the 914 fans site. Also a Rennlist member (anyone? a little help here with the name???) who had a great site that goes through the entire proceedure, along with anicdotes about his "tool-wench" Pam (now why I remember HER name and not his, I don't know.) I'd say about $450-$500 total parts and labor to have a hired wrench put it on.

he's just about replaced everything on that teener of his in his rust repair.. i think he just recently welded the back clip back on the car..
e-mail him, i'm sure he'll be more than happy to share his horror stories on rust with you..
