914-6 conversion, what is needed? new to 914's

Any and all advice will be appreciated. I did some searches with little success. I am currently looking for a 914 and wish to convert it to a 6 banger as the motor in my current 911 might simply be replaced. I just need to know what parts are needed for this since I am pretty much in the dark. Engine mounts, sheet metal and throttle linkage is about all I can come up with, I am sure there are more, I also plan on using a 915 trans so I'm sure that also requires some more noodling.

Headers, oiltank, cable shifting or vellios 916 kit, fuel pump,.......money. ;)

It is not big deal. I think AA sells a kit on eBay for like 300 or 400 dollars or something. You can pop all the stuff in in a long weekend. Figure another day or two for the five bolt hubs.

Uhhh, riiiiiiight. "Sure, four days and you can have everything done!"

Lots of info can be found at this link:

It takes time and money. You can also do things right, or you can cut corners. I believe that the "quick six" style mounting setup is cutting corners, myself...

Dave, for god sakes, don't be such a slacker. Is there anyone here who couldn't get a conversion done in a weekend if they tried? Or popped in steel flares one Saturday afternoon before a Sunday autoX? Not to mention fixing some rusty longs!

These cars are simple to work on. Eveybody knows that.

Thank you guys so far. I plan on taking my time, lots of it to do this and do it right, ya know acid dip the tub, reinforce the chassis with tubing, front oil cooler, 5 lug hubs, the gammut. Of course this will mean about a year of work but I need to get my shopping list done so I can start picking up parts.

As far as modding a 915 trans to work in a 914, what is the best shifter setup out there, Patrick Motorsports worth the money, what about the wevo? any other options?

BURN-BROS 06-25-2004 10:57 AM

I'm not sure that the wevo internal gate would work on the side shift mod, but I heard it does wonders to the trans. Much dinero as well. The shifter completes the package. Ask the 911 guys or do a search on it.

Some people have done a cable shift. I don't know whats available(but would like to). What about adabting the Boxster shifter? If you go cable and there are no gate in the shifter that may be O.K. Anybody familiar with it?

Porschekid962 06-25-2004 12:06 PM

Im coming from the 911 crowd actually so I know all about the wonders the wevo does to the 915. I was just trying to figure out if there was a more elegant way to setup the shifting than the cable kits. cables stretch out quite a bit after a while and they get "sloppy".

bulkhead engine mount

sport engine mounts

engine sheet metal

headers

modified oil tank (i'm thinking of putting a custom alu one in the trunk)

oil cooler up front

fuel pump

throttle linkage

some way to shift gears.

I like to think that list is complete but im sure im missing something.

The best == expensive. But this one is the best, as far as I can tell.

IMHO, a 915 box is not needed until you get to the 3.2 motor. For a 3.0, a fresh 901 should be OK (but only "OK"), but for a 3.2 I would downgrade that to "iffy".

If you want to shift with rod then go with the Velios mod or buy a rare 916 trans. Both are $$. Dave is right, the least headache will be the side shift 901.
Cables are in a great deal of production cars that shift very well for a very long time. Odds are that the kits out there aren't very robust. The beck spider has a cable shifter that shifts very well. I don't know for how long.
If this car is going to have a heater I would not acid dip the car.

Porschekid962 06-25-2004 04:57 PM

Why do you suggest not acid dipping it?? I plan on powdercoating it and then welding up a small heat exchanger box on one header for use only as a defroster. Would I be in trouble somewhere??

BURN-BROS 06-25-2004 05:09 PM

There are paper tubes(same as the ones exposed behind the speakers) in the longitudinals that will be eaten away when you dip. unless you went with an oil cooler up front close to the vent system and routed air that way.
