Optima Battery

Are they worth it? Can I use my original battery clamp?

I love my Optima. Thing has tons of juice and I don't have to worry about acid dripping all over the place. I was able to mount mine using the original clamp. I'll try and take a picture of it tonight.

damn right they are worth it... any gel-cell battery is 10x better than an acid dripper! there are also odyssey batteries, same type of technology... not much cheaper though

Cool

Go to Pep Boys or wherever and pick one up. I think they run about $129 or so. Make sure you get the red top battery - they come in several colors and the red one is the only suitable car battery.

Mine is mounted in a stainless steel battery tray and fits perfectly.

Make sure you get a red top 34R...the R stands for 'reverse terminals...which is what our 914 cars need. The standard 34 fits too, but the terminals are a little further away

Also be careful, My stock battery clamp just didn't bite onto the battery, plus the (sharp) edge of the clamp rubbed on the bottom of the cells. Get the 'Group 78' GM puck adapter too...free on request from Optima. It replaces your stock battery clamp and accommodates the Optima perfectly. Just Call Optima they will send one right out.

Check Costco or Sam's club. I think I saw them for around $100.00

Here's the picture of the optima battery. This is not the reversed terminals so the cables do get a little stretched.
