Please help me fix my top latches!

Hi everybody,
I don't know why but my latches are a bit loose and my top rattles (passenger side much more than driver). I am literally losing my mind from the constant rattling and screeching. Is there a way to adjust them to make them tighter? I tried to search the archives but I didn't see anything (probably a function of my poor searching skills). If someone could please recommend something I would truly appreciate it!

Joe

I had the same problem and used a decidedly low tech approach. I cut a small piece of closed cell rubber foam (I think it came from an old wet suit)and slipped it over the levers. Although they're still loose the rubber keeps them quite and they don't flop around anymore.

These latches get loose over time mostly due to a deterioration of the rubber seals (side and back) on the targa top itself. Replacing these seals is the best way to restore a snug (and rattle-free) fit. However, the seals can be expensive. I have used a small section of rubber hose (vacuum hose) over the small hooks on the underside of the roof as a solution.

There's a tech article about making a rear targa seal for $8. I did this with GREAT results. You use a black foam garage door seal you can get at most hardware stores. I got mine at an Ace store. The directions on the pelican site were much more elaborate than what I did. If you just look at your current seal, its easy to replicate the design. I ended up making one cut along the length of the seal, and using contact cement to roll a little piece over and stick it back on itself. The seal looks great, and works so well I have to press on the top a little to get the rear latches on. No squeek, and very inexpensive.
