What shade of red is best?
My 73 2.0 is at the paint shop. I am going with red, but what Porsche red is best. I had planned on using Guards Red because I've always wanted a Guards Red Porsche. But I guess Porsche hasn't used that color for a while. What should I ask the painter to buy.

I think the red that most looks like the baby blue is best :P

There's always Mars Red, but I'm not sure if that color is available either.
I'm sure the body shop can color match to your liking. |

You can still get Guards Red on the new 911 and Boxster as a standard color - no extra charge.
![]() Even if they haven't used the color in a while, you should still be able to get it...just find a car the right color and have the paint shop get the color numbers off of it to match. -Boyo [This message has been edited by boyo (edited 05-01-2000).] |

If your painter can't get guards red get a new painter. I prefer a single stage paint for solids. More depth, less plastic look. Dupont has a great single stage urothane. I painted a freinds beetle 4 years ago. The car shines like wet jolly rancher candy stick and doesn't have a rock chip on it. Everyone have their own preference.

My painter can get Gaurds Red. That's what he painted the engine compartment with. I was just wondering what red Porsche used now, and if it was a better or brighter red. I am going with single stage with wet sanding between coats. I had my Corvette done that way 14 years ago, and the paint is still awesome. I've seen too many disasters with clear coat after five or six years. Thanks for the input everybody.

Whatever red you get make sure that it is going to be available for the rest of the time you intend to own the car. Red is one of the toughest colours to touch up/match. Also, the pigments that are used in red are not the same from one paint company to another. My folks have a red Toyota that was repaired before it left the showroom, and now 8 years later they have a red car with a 'lovely' orange fender. I'm sure other red car owners know what I'm talking about. I have just completed spraying the entire shell of my 73 2.0 Blood Orange, the colour was listed as Tangerine when used on the 914 for 1972.
It is a dark orange, almost red, very bright and very 70's, I think it suits the 914 concept perfectly. One of the 2 918s made is this colour and it was popular for 911RSs. The VW code is L21E I think. Now I just have to put every nut & bolt back together again... |
