The engine is not fine...

The following pictures are not for the faint of heart. If you have a weak stomach, you shouldn't look at these photos. If you have a tender spot in your soul for Type 4's, then walk away from this thread now.

Well, that might explain that "odd noise" you've been hearing... ;)

Is the conclusion a lean mixture, or a simple combustion leak?

--DD

Jason Porter 07-22-2004 12:27 PM

Combustion leak. Not very happy at the moment. Pulling the head tomorrow. How can a man do this sober, I guess I'll find out.

Tom Perso 07-22-2004 12:52 PM

Ouch, been there, done that.

My 2270 ate it's first set of lifters within the first hour it ran...

Thanks. You too man!

John Rogers 07-22-2004 01:44 PM

I got tired of seeing things like that and finally went with a six! Just remember, anything can be repaired! Good luck.

Jason Porter 07-22-2004 01:57 PM

I'm about to be going with a Toyota!

Alfred1 07-22-2004 03:04 PM

Sorry to hear it, Jason.

Jason Porter 07-22-2004 03:06 PM

Oh, the Toyota thing? Don't be sorry. I'm keepin' this thing, got too much money in it to sell it. The Toyota's just gonna be my "to h3ll with this bug" car. Ya' know, the one I drive while this one's down for the count.

Zeke 07-22-2004 05:21 PM

Come on guys, if you're gonna do this to the T-4, do it right!

Obviously, I'm working on it.

Shove The motor I built back in to the car. That is a sweet running single port that I would drive to New York and Back.

I gave it to some kids building a dune buggy. It didn't run either, it walked briskly (slow).

Jason Porter 07-22-2004 07:16 PM

As for the engine, it will get pulled tomorrow, and the head will either be fixed, or replaced. No big deals right?!

At least I got a b!tch!n' trophy spark plug to remind me of my ride to work today!!!

Scooter311 07-23-2004 04:39 AM

Dooooooooooooooooood what happened? And when, what did I miss?
:(

Jason Porter 07-23-2004 06:29 AM

Compression leak around the plug, or through the plug actually, as you can see. No biggie, my Pelican friends and I have it under control.

Jake Raby 07-23-2004 12:54 PM

I have some blown engine pics that will blow your mind... who can post bigger files here??

Jason Porter 07-23-2004 12:58 PM

Send em over buddy!

Eddie Brown 07-25-2004 11:08 AM

That sucks Jason. The only problem I had with my 1911 (while in my 70 bug), was that I sheard the flywheel bolts. I may have revved it too hard (6500-7000 rpms) a few too many times. Now that motor will find it's way into the 72 914. The bug has a 1914 Turbo in it. The carbon seal went out in it, so the turbo is being repaired right now. I know the feeling of having to swap, or remove conversion motors, but it's still fun to work on em'.

BTW, what are the specs on your new tranny?

Peace,

Eddie.

Jason Porter 07-25-2004 08:16 PM

4.37 R & P, 1969 stock ratio gears, heavy duty side plate, super diff. It doesn't miss a beat, especially running the Swepco. I can match rev it to 4200 and shift into 1st at around 25MPH, and it just tears the floor pan off almost. I only did it once, and it torqued everything so hard it snapped my stainless alternator strap in half!!! The guy I got the strap and the replacement from said he'd never heard of or seen that happen in his life. Now I run 2!

As for an update on the status of the whole deal, I took the head over to my machinist, and he just laughed. He said it'll be under $1000.00 to fix, and he'll get to it for me by the end of this week. Which is fine, since I'll be driving this for the week! If you are interested in this very clean car by the way folks, just let me know. I'll make sure you get hooked up. He might possibly take a little less as long as knows it's going to a good home. Don't count on it, but ya' never know.

Eddie Brown 07-25-2004 09:22 PM

Who did you take it to Jason??... I deal with European motorworks in Hawthorne...

That's ridiculous. $1000.00????? No way. Are you getting rid of your bug because of this?

Jason Porter 07-25-2004 09:46 PM

LMAO...I meant $100.00

And while Itrust European (that's where I got the heads, I wanted the best guys I know of to make this repair.

Scooter311 07-26-2004 04:54 AM

Hey Jason,
the car you're driving in the meantime - it's like deja-vu all over again!

Mah baby, before 'extreme makeover'
