Gas cap questions

I'm trying to eliminate the gas odor coming from the tank, especially noticeable after a fill-up. I need a new cap gasket, the old one's in bad shape. Does the one in the PP catalog fit the metal cap? If not, what's a good alternative replacement?

I have two types of caps on our 1973 and 1974 tanks. One is screw on the other is a bayonet closure. Both gaskets are different, so I'd see which you have and call Pelican.

Garage
Porsche Crest Gas odor

I had a similar problem with my car. My mechanic said the odor was due to the fact that I have 30 year old fuel lines. I had them replaced and my garage smell much better now. Eddy

It's just my cap, replaced all hoses when I installed the tank a few months ago. I'll probably cut out a new gasket from some sheet rubber stock.

I just took my gas cap to the local quick-lube and asked them if I could rummage through theri old oil filters to find a gasket that would fit. Took me less than 5 minutes and works great! I love free stuff!

That's one solution, but I picked up some rubber sheet stock from Ace hardware for two bucks and cut some gaskets. Doubled them up and now it's sealing tight. End of gas fumes. The simplest parts seem to be the ones hardest to find.
