Turn The Lights On
Have 76'2.0L, but almost lost it on the famous road where James Dean got killed in the 50's. This is the road called highway 41/46 up over and by Paso Robles. There is even a tree there w/ restaurant to mark the occassion. BUT, I almost made it myself.
Ok, I need to replace my headlights. But, what would you folks recommend? I have heard alot about these 100 watt hella's, but they burn up your dash board. Any ideas from you experienced people-most greatly appreciated. Signed, James Dean (almost the 2nd). Ouch! |

Check out the archives on this BB. There have been several discussions recently regarding headlight upgrades. In short, any replacement headlight that is more than the stock 55/60w will require a relay and some 10-12ga wire be installed to avoid pulling the current thru the dash switch and associated wiring.

See the tech article on this in the Pelican Site.
http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/mult_h4_headlamps/mult_h4_headlamps.htm This is one of the first upgrades I did to my car. I think the bulbs I have are 55/100 or 55/80? Man are they nice for a drive in the mountains at night. I did not install the optional relay and while everything works fine, it is probably a good idea. I talked with one of the guys on the phone at Pelican and he said that he had them in his car without the extra relay and no problem... Still I may put the relay in later anyway as it seems like too much power to be pulling through the normal circuit. I have had mine for a little less than a year with no problem from cooked wires yet. I lost one bulb due to one of the headlamps rattling around I think. You can pick up spares at an off road car or motorcycle place. The FLAPS don't usually carry them since they are not DOT legal for street use... too bright! - Dave |

I'm running 80/100W H4's in the mains -- no relays yet but that's "on the list. I never have occassion to use the high beams for a long continuous period: if I did, I'd probably have a meltdown.
I also put the Euro Hella H3 driving lights (55W) down below. These have proved to be a real b!tch to get aimed properly, but they throw out a ton of light. These lights are very difficult to find and cost around $80-100 apiece but are the "real deal". ![]() |
