Red face Formuling wheel ADAPTER VW/Porsche?

Hello,

I was wondering if anybody could tell me if the steering splines on my 1971 VW Super Beetle are the same as the splines on the early 70's Porsche 914's. ALSO, I have a formuling steering wheel but not the adapter! I WOULD LOVE TO BUY ONE IF I COULD FIND ONE!! I have been looking for months and have found nothing....so, if anyone wants to sell theirs i would probably buy it! Thanks!

Paul

From what I have been told, they are the same so any VW adapter that the wheel fits on will work on your 914. Formuling is still around I think, do a web search for them and see what you come up with. Chance are you will find what you want. Good luck.

VW changed the splines 3 times in the production of bugs, and I don't know which one is the same as 914. Once it was changed by 1mm, and later it was made much smaller and matched the rabbit column.

There are two different 914 adapters also, so it is even more complicated.

You might try looking for squareback stuff since some parts are the same.

Well, I'll tell ya--I have a Formuling quick release hub for my '74 914. I bought it about fifteen years ago so I don't know if they still make them. It's marked for 914-4, and 914-6 (69, 70, 71). Maybe someone can spin off this information. Sorry, mine's not for sale.

St Wheel Adapter?

Hello No Substitute,
Is your adapter a collapsible (accident) design? If it is off the car, is there a part #? TIA.

It has a deep cup that faces the driver. I assume this is intended to deform in an impact. I'm not certain if this is what you mean. The part is stamped 1281. This is the hub alone (not the quick release unit) and I believe you can bolt the quick release unit to it, or the wheel itself.

St. Wheel Adapter

No Sub,
Does the adapter have louver-shaped cut-outs or stampings to help it collapse in an accident? (Sorry I wasn't clear.)

No louvres, cutouts or stampings. Just two cups, one flanged, riveted together with the splined solid piece in the center. It is fifteen years old, so maybe more recent models, if they have them, would be more safety oriented.
