Leaking heat exchanger
I just installed a set of SS heat exchangers (used, but look new) on my '74 2.0. I couldn't get them tight enough on the driver's side that they wouldn't leak. I took them to a decent shop that I trust and they had no success either. There must be something I don't know about installing them. Are the little flat copper (or bronze) washers the only type of seal at the head? Help!

If the PO ran them with a big leak for a long time holes form around the ends that mate to the head, or sometimes they "tweek" or bend a little. Use a 12"+ long bastard/mill cut file and file across both SSI flanges at the same time to level things out. File until both flanges are shiny, and try your best to file in a staight level fashion. Too much is as bad as not enough. Be careful not to file the flanges at an angle.
Use new copper gaskets and make sure NONE of the exhuast studs are pulled out, a very common problem. When installing, you can try some of the spray on copper gasket coating, or last resort the "copper RTV" gasket maker. |
