You forgot to say the magic word.............................

You just take the heat exchangers off the heads (OK, that leaves out a lot of swearing and spraying with Aero Kroyl and possibly breaking exhaust studs and more fun stuff like that), pull the old gaskets out, put the new ones up in the recess at the exhaust port, and keep them in place while you put the exchangers back on.

I have seen high-temp RTV used to hold them, just at the edges. It only has to hold for as long as it takes to get the exchanger on. I usually push them in place and then rotate them a bit, which usually works about half the time. Sometimes I get the exchanger sitting on the studs (no nuts installed) and then have to put the gaskets back in again around the heat exchanger tubes.

I forget the torque setting for the exhaust nuts, but it's not very high! Check your Haynes.

Take a file to the top of the header tubes and flatten them out. Leave the file marks to 'bite' into the copper.

Use a file that is large enough that you get both tubes at once. They must be flat and straight relative to each other.
