With the 3.2 in the track beast, the 901 gear box is holding up very well. IMHO, going with a 915 gear box is not much of an improvement over the 901 gear box.

As stated earlier, a flat 6 is a flat 6. Extra HP is nice, but any thing over 150 HP in a 914 is a blast to drive :D

Jim,

I had talked to Hayden some months ago and I really wanted to go with the 915 and conversion kit and use a bigger motor than a 2.2. And at some point I can still do that. But the current cost analysis on my thin wallet states repair the car and use what you have. After giving this some thought the last few days, I'm going to use the 2.2S mfi with single plug and msd ignition. Where are your recommendations to gain the most hp using pump gas? Also, using the 901 with torque biasing dif, will a front and rear sway bar help drivability for street use?

JJEMG,

For most HP, the exhaust is a good area to gain HP. With MFI, it is hard to get more HP w/o spending big $$.

IMHO, rear sway bar is not recommended. Front bar is great. Could go with big T-Bars in the front and 140 in the rear for a good street ride.

The 901 gear box can be built to handle over 300 HP.
Porsche went from the 915 to the G-50 gear boxes on the 3.2 Carreras for what I believe was a reliabiltiy issue and better shifting. So why go to a gear box that was questionable on a 911?

I was under the impression that you can't flip the r/p on the g50. Is that true?

FWIW, I read that alot of guys running MFI (2.2, 2.4, 2.7) who switched their stock muffler to a sport muffler end up with a flat spot. Their feeling is that the MFI likes to have some back pressure. Or do you think that they need to adjust the MFI richer?

There has been previous post about a G-50 in a 914. It is not easy to do. Flipping the r/p is not an option.

jjemg, I recently moved to Birmingham and I have a 3.4 Twin plug (6) with a 915 (flipped R/P) in it; weld up the speedo boss and relocate on the other side. Shift pattern will be upside down unless you engineer a shifter mechanism. I have a Boxster cable shifter with a mechanical masterpiece of engineering for the shifter points in it, shifts great. The project has been one PIA after another. The complete wiring harness must be made up, the motor mounts must be fabricated, the oil lines must be routed, new fuel lines along with a good fuel pump that you can get to, 915 must be spaced down as it hits the trunk floor pan, speedometer must be changed for the electronic, clutch and clutch cable must be reengineered, throttle linkage is the only thing that fits right in, reverse light switch needs to be rewired to fit. I had a 901 gearbox and stock axels with 2.7 ltr in it; I kept breaking axels but not the tranny. I changed the axels out for the (Big 4 bolt early) axels and that solved my problem (you must fabricate a spacer for the new axels or you will not be able to adjust the toe in and out of the rear trailing arms (learned that the hard way) and you will burn out the axels.
My expierence on a limited budget, stick with the 2.2 and the stock tranny. You may want to change the axels and stub flanges out before you start breaking axels.

Interesting discussion. FWIW, I went the 2.2 route with the idea that it would be a reliable long life setup. I built a 2.2 T engine with E pistons/cyls for higher compression. I'm running Webers and a Crane HI6 ignition. Part of my reasoning was that I wanted a six that would be an improvement over the 1.7/4, but that would not break the bank :rolleyes: Overall, I am happy with this, but I have to say that if I could do it over again, I would go with a biffer engine (I think 2.7 to 3.2 would be ideal). I ridden in Dave's (GPR) project car (3.2 Carrera), and it is awsome (I nearly wet myself during that ride :eek: ) http://www.********.com/aboutGPR/customerCars/projectCar.asp

Although I can get a decent adrenaline rush in my little 2.2 six, it's nothing like Dave's car. Given what I've put into mine over the several years that it has taken to complete the project, I think that I could have gone with a beefier engine for not much more. I will live hapily with what I have, but if only...... :D

So far(8,000 miles), very happy with my 3.0L W/ 46 Webers and a 901 trans w/ 904 main shaft & intermediate plate . Engine has an E cam and Cosworth 9.8:1 pistons. HP approx 230. No problems so far. It's quicker than my '88 930 turbo straight line and on the track! No matter what you chose...you will have a blast!

When I had my engine rebuilt, I change the crank and rods with the intention of creating a high compression 2.4. What I ended up doing was spending $6000 and making a 2.7RS spec motor, except higher compression and better ported heads and Weber Carbs. It should make 210-240HP. The Carbs are not yet sorted out. But it is already scary fast.

I like with Mike95125 is doing - A 2.7 CIS-S. This should give him decent (175-180) HP. And it should be very reliable.
