removeable back window
 

what kind of experiences has anyone had driving around without their back window?
i'm considering making mine so it can be pulled almost as easily as the top.
any ideas or input?

With 50 series tires and a tired 1.7L using a Monza/crap muffler on the highway...

At highway speeds it was near impossible to hold a conversation. Maybe with a good muffler, the rain tray, and all the sound deadening, it would be bearable. You need to figure out a way to remove the window (a plastic one I assume) past the trim panels. Also I've seen at least 3 914's with rotten floorpans because the rear window wasn't sealed right.

I had thought of doing this to my race car, but the people that have raced 914's for years said there will be a slight vacuum created in the driver's area and that will suck in the oil/gas/exhaust fumes. That's why they remove the windshield and put on one of those Ginther style windscreens. But what the hell, try it and let us know.....

You can fix the back draft problem by taking out the windshield too.... but then its the damn bug problem... always something with these 914's...

Seriously though, I would like to see someone do an electric back window if that was possible... no idea if the car/sheet metal geometry would allow this, but I think it would be cool.

There are conversions for full and mini pickups that make the rear window roll down. The window is in a seperate frame from the car. This frame sits about an 1" inside the cab at the bototm and is flush at the top. So basically the window is at a steeper angle than factory allowing the bottom to lower past the bottom stock frame.

Expensive, and you loose 1-2" of seat travel, not much fun in a Lightning.

I've thought about doing a pop-out window that is similer to some of the pop-up sun roofs. I figured out how to drill the holes in tempered glass and found hinges but gave up figuring the sealing problem... that was 6-7 years ago.

I have the rear window out of my car. The guy who did the body work forgot to install it before he put the cage in. Unless I take the cage out, the glass window cannot be installed. I made a plexiglass window that can be bent around the cage, but have not installed it yet.

Yes, it is very loud and it does get very wet if it rains. I drive my car around town some, but primarily it is for the track and autocrossing. With the side windows down, I do get a nice draft through the car on hot days at the track. This does not offset the noise and the water though. I am about to move. Once I am in the new house, I am going to install the plexiglass.
