? about using BMW brakes on the rear
If I use BMW calipers at all for wheels, do I absolutely have to use a master cylinder bigger than my 19mm? Thanks, Pete Carroll Monkton, Md.

When I first put them on all four wheels I tried the 19mm m/c and did not like the fact I had to push the pedal more than half way to make it fully solid. This was with a tee in place of the prop valve too. I installed the 23mm m/c and pedal travel is minimal. Try it to see what you feel okay with I guess. Good luck

The Tech Article on the physics of braking is helpful. In summary, the larger cross sectional area of the MC the greater the volume of fluid displaced, and also the greater the pressure applied to achieve equal pressure at the wheel cylinder.

Peter,
I am getting ready to do this also, and am concidering moving the front brakes to the back instead of BMW calipers all around. This hopefully will keep things in a F/R ratio close to the original. Have VW T and 19mm MC. (I have a MC from my BMW 728i that I had in Italy, just in case......) The tech article that lmcchesney mentioned has good data and an excellent explanation of what to expect when finished. Good luck, and please post results. Fin |
