Backordered parts from Pelican
What is Pelican's policy on back ordered parts? Is it to just ship out the rest of the order, then ship the back ordered parts when they come in, without contacting the buyer? If so, I would like to make a reccomendation for orders shipped to Canada. Contact the buyer and ask him if he would like to wait for the entire order, or ship it now. Here is my reasoning for this:
I made a fairly large order (for me at least) a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday, I recieved half of the order, shipped by FedEx. On top of what I paid for shipping, I got hit with a $45 brokerage and customs fee. Now, when I get the rest of my order, I will probably be hit with another fee. I realize this isn't really Pelican's fault, but if I had been contacted, then I would have been able to decide if I wanted to wait or not. I guess my biggest beef is with the high brokerage fees. I'm never sure whats going to happen when getting a shipment from the U.S. Sometimes I've had to pay $5, this time it was $45. I'm guessing that FedEx probably has really high brokerage fees, and that I just got screwed over. Anybody know the cheapest way to ship to Canada, without getting bent over in one way or another?

I live in Canada too and whenever I get something that was shipped by UPS I have to pay another 20% to UPS for Customs Brokerage Fees (Canada Post charges a $5 flat fee). Pelican is very good about letting you choose to have your items shipped by US Post unless it's oversize and has to be shipped another way.

This has bothered me too.
I had the following happen; - They ship what they have instock and ship the rest later, without contacting the buyer. - They hold everything and DON'T contact the buyer. I had to call two weeks later to see wht the hold up was. I was then told the parts were on back order ![]() They are still one of the better parts houses around but it seems things were better a few years ago. IIRC my last two orders were not too smooth. Lets go PParts...Drop us a email about backorders ![]()

After you place an order with them online, Pelican will email you a link to a web page with info about your order.

We've installed a new feature last week that now allows you to see your order get 'kitted' in the warehouse. The status screen will show you which parts are assembled in your order's "parking spot". Next year (1 Qtr), we are hoping to have our new backorder system in place which will allow us to better track backorders and other problems with orders. Stay tuned - we're making improvements each and every day!
Thanks for your continued support! -Eli |

Kinda off topic, but what are typical duties on new automotive parts in Canada?

I believe that there is no duty on items brought into Canada that are manufactured in the US or Mexico. For imported items that are not from those countries, the duty varies according to the country of manufacture. For example, I bought a 1.8L longblock from the States but because the motor was made in Germany I had to pay 6% in duty (on top of taxes) to import it.
Here's some light reading that might clear it up for you. |

UPS is the worst way to send items to Canada (if you are the receiver). The driver's won't hand over your stuff until you've paid the duty. The last time I ordered that way, every item was identified by origin and duties applied which ended up being very expensive. Don't forget the delays involved even though it was shipped by courier.

The question here is not to complain about paying taxes or duty as if you get lucky enough to find it in canada the duty are built-in the price and you get the taxes at the end ,,, what is buzzing me off is the way the shipping company act with some of the shipment,, like UPS ,, thy will automatically charge 50 cad for brokerage charge,, fedex 45cad on top of duty ( if applicable) so if you have to order anything from the states it cost you 45-50cad just to order, so a 10cent item will cost you 0.1 + 15 shipping + 45 brokerage + taxes and duty on 10 cents will cost 60$ the best way is always USPS air mail quick shipping , and only 5$ brokerage, I hate fedex and UPS even more
