Hot Stuff
Ok, heres the deal, when my ignition is on my coil gets real hot. I don't think this is normal. I've checked my connections they appear to be correct also my car also has been misfiring under load, I don't know if this is related, but worth checking out. Any ideas?
Thanks pete |

Your coil should not be any warmer than the other components in your engine bay. If it is HOT then it may be time for a replacement. You can buy a Bosch replacement for about $25. I would try it and see if the miss goes away as well.

Do a resistance check, I'll bet it is way out of spec to cause the high temp problem. If not make sure no hot air is blowing on it from the fan system. Good luck.

I had the same thing happen on my car. I assumed the reason was that the coil is charging up with energy but isn't sparking so the energy is turned into heat??? You are talking about having the car on but engine off, right?
Total WAG on my part. It was a new NAPA coil at the time. Now I have a Crane x-3000 and a PS-91 dry coil. Make sure the misfire isn't engine knock, or detonation. Try a higher octane gas, or lower the timing advance a few degrees. Detonation WILL detroy your engine. Other things to cause a under load miss for me were cloged injectors (I tryed "B-12 Chem tool" and it is about the best thing next to sliced bread) and corroded connectors at the injectors. Try changing spark plugs and make sure the gap is set right. [This message has been edited by JP Noonan (edited 06-09-2000).] |
