I'm gonna change my front trans seal
I REALLY need to, has anyone here done it, and how to? I haven't taken a good look at it yet, but it doesn't look too complicated - the shift fork looks kinda interesting, is there a special tool?
It leaked with gusto, back when it WAS RUNNING.... I can't do anything else to the car anyway, I might as well do that. |
Assuming you have the transaxle out, the seal isn't too hard to replace. Remove the clutch fork (hex screw at pivot ball) and remove the fork and throwout bearing. Then remove the two nuts holding the throwout bearing guide tube (whatever it's called) then you can get to the seal to pry it out. Careful you don't damage the lip of the new seal when you put it in. There's probably a tech article on this someplace. Good time to check/replace other parts in there while you're at it (like pivot ball and bushing, etc.). Good luck.

It's a little tough to get the old one out. Some seal pullers work on it, some don't. I have heard of people screwing a dry-wall screw in and using that to pull the seal out. I have also heard of people just pushing it into the main transmission case and then pulling the differential cover to fish the seal out. (Usually as a last resort, though.)

So how do you get the seal off the shaft from inside the diff cover? I would like to see that.
Use the dry wall screw method if you cant pop it out. |
I don't recall what they said.

Usually, the front seal isn't too bad. If you have the tranny out of the vehicle, then I would replace _all_ of the seals. If one has cracked and started leaking, the others are brittle and will start soon.
The one that is a B!tch to get out is the seal in the shift console shaft. James |
