Normal/Optimum Head temperatures
I'v searched the archives for this one, and while I learned a lot about cooling in general, what I'd like to know is "What is considered normal, high or excessive for the cyl head temp gauge?
I'm running 350 ( # 3 head) after 45 minutesof 65 mph continous driving. Thanks in advance, Bill |

350dF on No.3 is about right. Figure 250-275 during low speed cruise (neighborhood speeds) and stop-and-go traffic. 300-350dF for high-speed cruise. 350-400dF for high loads (very high speeds or pulling up a long hill). Over 400dF is getting too hot. Note that the VDO gauge and sender package isn't temperature compensated, so the gauge will read low on hot days, high on cold days. Take the numbers above as +/- 50dF to allow for this. If you're indicated 450dF and it's 20dF outside, you're still fine. If you're showing 400dF on a 100dF day, though, pull over.
