Second Lever Problem

Hey! I have a problem with the second lever on the heating control in my 74 914. It just doesn't work. I take it that this cable does NOT go to the BEHR box in the front...it doesnt matter what setting it is on ( and the lever does not to go the extreme left anyway) it blows air to all directions...

does anybody have the answer for me? where does the second heating lever (directional one with the arrows) lead?

The middle one in the panel on the dashboard should direct fresh air either up, or down, or in the middle. There should be a cable attached to the lever inside the dash that goes to the fresh air distribution box up under the cowl--the "BEHR box" as you call it. Actually, I think it may be more than one cable.

You will have to remove the gas tank to get access to the box; I don't recall how you get access to the levers.

You can pull out the ashtray to look at the levers to see if they are all hooked up and working.

it's wierd...its hooked up but there is a bend in the middle one right before it connects to the heater panel...now it doesnt matter which side its on it still pours fresh air to all three places (defrost, vents and feet) does anybody know where the cables hookup

and by middle i mean the exposed part of the cable RIGHT BEFORE it connects to the dash. Do i have to remove the gas tank to get access to this thing...I noticed some C-clips yesterday when I looked at it and i was wondering if i could move any internal parts to see if the cable was faulty or disconnected

or at least set it to put air throught the vents....but wait...just thought of something. I think there is something seriously wrong with the box because if it was just a cable problem then it would just go to EITHER the top, middle or bottom not all THREE. Anybody out there with me on my thought...just a small thing when i should be focusing on other things....

One of the problems with this set up is the fact that they are not cables, but infact wires. You cant push on a cable. If there are any 'sharp' bends in any of them, hooked up or not, they wont work.

Try to straighten the bend then find the point where the wire housings are secured and make sure they are tight for starters. If the housings arent secure the wire and housing will just move around and do nothing.

After that make sure your BEHR box and attached tubes are clean. I have found alternating between compressed air and a shopvac at the drain hole gets most out, or compressed air at the drain and a shop vac at the grill on top. Crap in the flaps can keep them open and bend the wires, making it seem the levers arent doing there job.

Take off the big tubes from the BEHR box before attempting to clean.

Thats for starters, it got mine working so I left it at that.
