flywheel/clutch questions
are our clutches/flywheels the same as any VW's? if so, what should i look for at the local junkyard for a flywheel? i have a 72 1.7 flywheel in my car with the 901 tailshifter tranny.

Nope. They are different. The early VWs had a 180 or 190mm flywheel, I can't remember. Later they changed to a 200mm flywheel. Neither will work on your 914 unless you do some major modifications. The bus flywheel is close to the same size, 220 vs. 228 or something like that, but I think there are mouting differences. I don't know about the other type 4s like the 411s. My suggestion is to find a 914 flywheel. They are not that much money. I bought a used one on e-bay for $26. It turned out to be near perfect. I got lucky, but they are out there. Of course, I recommend buying a new one from Pelican or have yours cut if you can afford it.

the problem with mine is that it came loose on my turbo engine and i wobbled out the mounting holes on the flywheel. it's running on it now, but i can't hit the RPMs the engine will do with the amount of off center it could be.
i think the clutch is going, but am not sure because of the way the tranmission is acting. |
