Front Struts / Shocks
 

Couple months ago I started to feel an odd clunk at the font of my 914 (73). Finally found time to check everything and found that the right front shock is bad. Left side may be going too.

Which new shocks should I get for a stock daily driver?

The rear of the car has KYBs with stock springs. Would KYBs up front be 1st choice to maintain balance? Would Boge be a better choice? I think Bilstein or Koni is more than I need at this time.

The type of shocks that are currently in the car is unknown. Honestly. I hunted through the pile-o-porsche-parts in dad's garage and found the original box. (He installed the shocks about 20 yrs ago before I had even thought about driving.) There was no manufacturers name on the blue and white box. The only print read (roughly) "One pair, Macpherson strut gas-charged shocks". Inside the box was a pair of orange and yellow Mulhullond (spelling?) shocks. (Free, if anybody wants.)

The gas charge (on the right) is gone but there is still plenty of damping. The car seems balanced, so I assume the charge is gone on the left as well.

I recently replaced all the shocks on my '75. It had the stock Boges in the front and some leaking, tired red Koni's in the back. I also installed slightly stiffer than stock 100lb springs.

Because I have 65-series tires on alloy wheels, my ride was already stiff enough that I didn't want to add any more stiffness. Hence the near-stock rear springs and replacement shocks. I went with new Boges all around, and am quite happy with the ride and handling. I wouldn't want the car any stiffer than it is, as it already rides like a truck!

Also, if you're car has the optional sway bars, that's more reason to consider stock shocks. Your car will already corner quite flat without stiffer shocks and springs.
