Fair price for a 74
I test drove a 74 1.8 for a friend last weekend and need to know what price range he should be looking for. The car only has 60k on it,has a new clutch and flywheel. No frame rust just some surface rust around the sails. The car ran rough when cold and great when warmed up. Needs alternator. Owner wants $5200.

Seems too high for me. I live in WV and good 914 2.0's go for around 4000.00. I've picked up 2 with no major rust but in need of paint for around 2500. I will base all my new purchases on a completed car. It just depends on how much you want to do ,theres nothing quite like a completed ready to go car.

I agree that $5,200 is too much in most places. And as you probably know, a 1.8 is not as desirable as the 2.0. 60K original miles would be worth something if it can be documented, but the car would likely also be in very good to excellent condition overall. If there is the usual wear and tear these cars acquire after nearly a quarter century then 60,000 miles on the odometer probably means nothing. A compression test will tell you something about the condition of the motor.

I just looked at a 74 2.0l here in Seattle for $7500. It had new paint, the interior was nice, about 120k, the owner said it was his dads who bought it new, been taken care of very well...blah,blah... I checked the battery tray and of course some decent rust. Then I looked underneath and the oils seals have been leaking for years...Heat exchanger were rusty too. It would be nice to have a one owner car but I would pay maybe $4500 for that car. Rebuilding of engines are not cheap and I just got though welding a new engine shelf and tray on another car.
