Poping out of 5th

I own a stock 70 1.7 which I just purchased from my uncle and has been sitting around for 5 years with maybe a total of 30 minuets of driving during that time. It has a little over 55000 miles on it. I don’t use it as a daily driver. I have maybe put 500 miles on it before it had any problems at all.
My problem is that it now pops out of 5th. If I hold the shifter all the way back in 5th and not let go until I release the clutch, it will stay in gear until I let off the gas.
I have been told that it could be the cincros (sp?) needing replacement, a bent…something…that attaches to the shifter, or that it could just need adjustment.

Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I would check out your shifter linkage adjustment. Pretty straight forward to do.

I had a Ghia that was like that. Something was wrong in the tranny, though. My solution was to hook a bungi cord to it.

I agree !

Check the linkage and tranny mounts. When you let off the gas things (Engine and tranny) are tweak'n just enough to pop out of 5th.

Definitely the first thing to try--always check the easy and cheap things first!! But it is also possible that the transmission needs a rebuild. :(
