Confused!!!???

Hey guys, about a month ago I dropped the engine and tranny to clean up the engine tin and replace the oil seals (73 1.7 stock fuel injection.) I took off all of the fuel injection, replaced all the oil seals adjusted the valves painted the tin and then put it all back together. Ever since then the engine has been lacking power. It runs really smooth throughout the RPM range and idles perfectly, but the power is just not there like it was before. I double checked the valve adjustment, they are perfect. The timing is dead on, all the vacum hoses's are connected and in the right spots, all electrical and ignition is in the right spot and connected. It runs great except there is a dramatic reduction in power. I don't get it?? Any ideas as to the problem would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Brent

I would check the vac line to the MPS one more time.

Also the electrical connection to the TPS, with engine off ignition on, move the throttle body by hand and listen for the injectors to click.

Pull the plugs and see if all the cylinders are firing correctly, if not look into the FI conections to the injectors and the three grounds (one for the brain, and one for each bank of injectors) at the back of the block under the intake.

Make sure the injectors are hooked up in the correct grouping. They fire two at a time, (1&4 and 2&3 I think???) unlike the 1.8L which fire all at once so it doesn't matter on a 1.8L, but on a 1.7-2.0L the grouping matters. Look at the wiring diagram and then pull the boot up over the FI plug. There are black and red numbers on the wires.

If the dizzy got wet the points might be bad.

I guess its the injector grouping or a arrent vac line. The Haynes manual has a good diagram, a little more clean than the one on this site.

BTW I agree something is very wrong, beacuse after I pulled the FI and painted the tin (with engine in) my car was actually FASTER. Only other thing that has improved the performance of my car that much was when I washed it last year, must be all that extra weight from the dirt. I swear I'm .5 tenths faster in the Quarter mile, gotta be around a sub-eighteen second E.T.

Thanks JP,

I'll double check all of that and hopefully fix the problem!
