twin weber 40 idf's v.s. single progressive weber

Does anyone have some information or feedback that they could offer me in deciding which carb option to use on a 2 liter motor with mild cam. I'm not looking to race, just a punchy street motor.

Thanks.

Absolutely stay away from the progressive, I have driven a 1.8 with dual 40s and a more agressive cam, and it pulled much harder than my 2.0 with the progressive setup.

VW Trends had a good article on carb selection this month. A single barrel per cylinder allows for better tunability and can even give better fuel efficiency. The venturi size they recommend is 3 to 5 mm smaller than the intake valve. The progressive is a 32/36, which is great for the old VW bus, but is a little lacking for the performance minded 914.

Hope this helps...

The single Pinto Weber carb that you are talking about is a waste of time. Go with a nice set of 40 Webers or Dells.

You can usually get a used set for around $350 that includes the air cleaners, manifolds, linkage, fuel pump, dizzy (get the Bosch 050) and regulator.

New from CB Performance will cost you a little under $1,000.00. If you are a DIY kind of guy, make sure you get the Weber carb book, get the main and idle jets that are recommended for your mootor and tools to sync the carbs. Also consider getting an Allison/Crane optical ignition, no points is nice....

If you use a mechanic, make sure he is an old fashioned air cooled VW type and knows his stuff.....do not use the 009 dizzy, it sucks.

Hope that helps....

I have to agree with the previous posters. I've used both and stuck with the duals. A major problem with the single progressive, especially with a warmer than stock cam is that it is looking for more manifold vacuum on throttle transition and will bog really badly if that vac is too low. I've used both the 40IDF Webers and Dellortos with good success (actually I will soon have a spare set of recently overhauled 40IDF's with manifolds, air filters and linkages due to a new project in progress).
