I just got a 914 V8 for $3k!!

Hello all-

I have been a regular on the 911 bbs for a few years now but this is my first 914 posting. As you can see by the title of the post I am a 914 owner now. I have a few questions. This car has a 327 Chevy and it seems to have been installed well. But as you can see by the price I paid it needs a bit of work.
My first questions are about the brakes and suspension. The car has 5 lug hubs but non-vented rotors. Are these early 911 parts? If I wanted vented rotors what would it require changing? The front strut housings are red. Koni? 911 or 914? How to tell? What are the largest Fuches I can fit under stock fenders?

-Thanks Alex

The 914 rotors could just be stock and redrilled to 5 lug. Pull a wheel off and check. Vented rotors would require changing out the calipers assuming you've got a 911 parts. I'm running 16x6 Fuchs with 225x50s on the rears with stock fenders. I think anything wider you'll have to flare.

What Aaron said.

Verify that they are not 914 disks that have been drilled out.
If you want to go the route closest to how Porsche engineered it;

911 front suspension will bolt in.
911 rear hubs and 914/6 stub axles will work on the back.
914/6 half shafts?(I forget)

Pix here-

As you ca see it's a bit rough. I am still not sure how to tell if I have re-drilled 914 rotors. I pulled a wheel and it looks like a 911 setup with that big aluminum spacer, just not vented. Is there a diameter difference?

Alex, it's got potential! Good luck on it.

Looks kinda like a Maybach paint scheme.

Post a pic of the front suspension with the wheel off. I am sure you will have fun with your new ride!

if the front looks similar to this, it's a 911 front suspension (or at least the struts)...you mentioned no venting? it could be early 912 parts...

it'll be pretty evident if re-drilled, 3 threaded holes will have nothing in them......

Wow... I see some cancerous rust problems.

It looks like I have earky 911 or 912 stuff because there is no evidence of re-drilling going on. To go the vented I just need to find calipers and rotors, correct?

Yes the bumper has a gross chunk of rust. The battery box area is solid as are the floors though. I would love to find a new front and rear bumpers.

Is this a missing shift bushing? Is this an exterally adjustable shock? Thanks,

Stock shocks, tail shifter transmission that needs bushings. I would look for a side shifter and do the conversion. As for what you need for the front brakes, you can get a set of M or S calipers, Volvo calipers and then a rotor. I am down in Orange county if you ever get down this way, bring it by and we can take a look at it and I can give you some infor on what you can do to upgrade it at low cost. Trust me, I did mine with low cost parts and really didnt cut any corners. Come by and check it out. PM me for info.

Go see Otto.....

avendlerdp 02-15-2005 05:48 PM

Thanks all-

Otto already has some of my money due to my 911. I'll be visiting him soon enough.

What Volvo calipers?? I like Pick-a-part shopping the best.

Looks like Koni adjustables to me. Look under the rockers for rust particularly on the pass. side. The wheels are pretty rare I think. They may be Torque Thrusts or ET's. Looks like you def. have a good headstart. Good luck. Pete

The rear shocks have a dial on the side near the bottom as well. Is one for rebound and the other for compression?

Who makes those wheels?

Here is an update. I got the 327 running pretty well after cleaning out the carb and doing some ignition tune up stuff. I then turned my attention to the shifting. ALL the busings in the tail shift system where either damaged or plain missing. After I replaced them it got a lot better. THis is when I discovered a flaw that could be of aid to you all. The end of the interior shift rod is pinned to the rod itself. That pinned connection was sloppy. The only way to fix it was to weld it. WOW what a difference. Pretty good shifting, for a tail shift! Next up, tires and brakes.

By the way the 327 will smoke the old, rotted, tires on the car in the first 3 gears...

Was that car parked by the Venice Bank of America, back in the Alley?
