Ignorance Question

I have always heard the 2.0 motor is the motor of choice when looking at buying 914's.

Other than the obvious power reasons, why is that so?

What are the fundamental problems with the 1.7 and 1.8?

Thanks for the education.

Power is 99% of the reason - I'm not sure what the other 1% is.

Fewer 2.0 were built. Most came with swaybars and the Apperance group.
There is nothing wrong with buying a 1.7-1.8 car.

If you need more power you can build a 2771cc if you want but a 2270cc is a bit more practical for daily driver street use.

For a Sunday toy a 2771cc is an good choice to scare yourself silly.

You can build a 2270 out of any of the engines right?

WOuld you inject or carb it and does either injection work with a 2270?

How about fuel pumps, clutches etc.?

I have been trying to find a great 914 with no luck, it might be an option to build my own.

2056 (96mm x 71mm)is what i heard was the limit for stock FI, never done it myself. I did run 96mm on a 1.8 with L-jet and 2.0 bus injectors, it even pasased smog in 2002.
I think the torque with the longer 71mm stroke makes it feel so much better
the problem with the 74, 75 1.8 L-jet was that the low compresion killed the power. 74 was better, 75 had a smog pump that dogged it out even worse. many peopel dis-like the L-jet FIs closed circuit vacuum system. one leak and it runs like ka-ka. I prefer teh L-jet FI
my current daily driver is a 1.7 D-jet, 29 mpg, love it.

Hey Sean
What's the skinny on the big motor you were building? I remember seeing some pics, wasn't that you?

Yup. 2.4L T-4. did you see teh pics?
I sold it to a fellow racer. he is a much better driver than me and wants to get into more speed and power. I raced the V8 a few times and my instructors felt I could hone my skills better if I did not use the power as a crutch so I am building a stock 2.0 for my track car and teh V8 is now just a toy

2270cc wont work with the stock FI. For now it carbs but I will have a programable Fi system shortly that will work even on a 2771cc.

6 spring clutch is a must. A rotory pump will work fine for carbs.

There are some nice ones for sale in So cal.

I am interested in the nice ones in Socal. I have just found trash. Not even worthy of a PPI.
