easy. access is from under car. somewhat basically, but refer to repair manual for complete procedure:

loosen belt
remove piece of engine tin
disconnect wiring
unbolt alt
installation is reverse

Will the alternator from a '75 1.8L fit a '73 2.0L?

Yes, the alternators for the four-cylinder 914s are all the same.

Check the Tech Articles for a slightly more detailed version of how to replace the alternator.

a valuable first step is to climb under and spray all those screws on the cooling tin with wd-39 or equivilent a few times over a couple of days prior to tackling the job. Also, get some spare 10 mm ( i think ) machine screws fer the tin. Don't forget about the 10mm bolt reached from over the engine that is between the alt and the fan holding the tin to the engine case.
