Turn the key... Engine revs to redline
I have the car all back together now and I'm hoping I simply screwed something up with the throttle linkage. As soon as I start the car the tach flies up to the redline before I turn it off. I had the engine removed from the car so the cable was disconnected. How do I adjust the cable?

I saw your post about it breaking, mine is on there, could I have put it on wrong? I thought there was only one way for it to go on.

I had this problem when I messed with my carb, it ended up being the throttle return spring...i forgot to put it back on

Do you have stock F.I. or carbs? What is the position of the butterfly flap in the throttle body? The return spring should NOT pull it into the open position. Good luck

First, check the throttle valve. Is it all the way closed?
Next, check your vacuum hoses. If you still have D-jet, the idle will be very high (could even be redline!) if enough hoses are unplugged. --DD

I vote for Vacuum leak too. It will soar with a manifold vacuum hose off...

2 things to check.
1 Put the car in nutral and start the car without the clutch. I had a problem where I pressed the clutch and it caught the throttle cable. 2 If you have a hose connected to the fan shroud it should be going to the fuel tank vapor system. NOT THE INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTOR. ask how I know....... beyond that check the obvious. It is always the simple stuf that gets screwed up.

Thanks for all of the ideas. It's not the return spring. I don't think it is vacuum because everything looks right but I won't rule it out. I was only starting it with the clutch pedal in, so I will hope that it is catching on the throttle cable. The butterfly is closed when the car is off also. I'll let you know what I find out. Thanks

did you replace any cables? make sure there's no interference with the clutch and throttle cables in the center tunnel.
