Heat Exchanger Question

I picked up a parts car and to my surprize, it looks like it has stainless steel 2.0 heat exchangers.

I don't have a photo right now, but how can I tell if these are stainless? The heat exchanger part is shiny like stainless steel but the exhaust pipes have surface rust.

The area where the muffler bolts up looks like stainless on one Exchanger but the other one has a fair amount of surface rust which wire brushes back to new looking.

Another point:

I just removed my regular heat exchanger from my 1.8 engine and I notice that the 1.8 heat exchangers are considerably heavier than the ones that I think are stainless......do stainless steel heat exchangers weigh less?

I added some pic's in the next post.

Any advice would be great..........................Vern

OK, heres some photos. Notice that the area that the muffler bolts up to is somewhat shiny but the pipes look a littl rusty.

They are stainless, and they do weigh less. Put them on your 1.8 will add a little power but you will also need a 2.0L muffler and muffler hanger.

Coming to the WCC?

A simple way to tell is to try a magnet. A magnet won't stick to stainless.

Great! They're stainless.....the magnet doesn't stick.

They came with a brand new bursch muffler. Unfortunately, it's the glass pack type and will probably be a little loud but this will do for now.

Thanks for the help........................Vern
