| Shutters for Crane Ignitions
I had swapped out my standard points/condenser set-up with a Crane XR700 unit. Unfortunately, one time when I was trying to get things lined up just right, I installed the shutter incorrectly (I'm still not sure how) and it got badly deformed when I cranked the engine. Anyhow, here's the thing. I suspect that a number of guys are running Crane XR700 or XR3000 ignitions on 914s with 6 or 8 cylinder engines. If so, is there anyone out there who may have an unused 4-cylinder shutter (#220) left from their kit? I'd be eager to trade any of the shutters that I have for 6's or 8's so that you could have a spare, in case you are ever unlucky enough to do whatever the hell I did. There are two 6-cyl and two 8-cyl shutters left in the kit. The only one with an embossed number on it is a #219. Hopefully, we can help each other out. Thanks, Howard Henneman

If you call Crane, I'm sure they'd send you new shutters in the mail for either nothing or a nominal charge.

Howard, I think that I touched a spare that I had a few weeks ago. Email me at nedlundsgaard@att.net with your snail address and I will mail it to you if I find it. My XR700 worked great on my 914, uh, 'til a fuel hose broke and the car burnt up........... Cheers, Fin

Brad: When I checked on the Crane website last year, it looked as though the only way they sold replacement shutters was as part of a $23 kit. However, as you suggested, I should probably give them a call to see if they would just send me one. Fin - - Before I put you through any trouble, let me check with Crane. If that doesn't work out, I would certainly appreciate your help. Thanks, Howard

Well, Brad, you were right. The guy I called at Crane was very cooperative, and will be mailing a replacement shutter to me ASAP. No hassles. Fin, thank you very much for the offer, but it looks like you won't need to go rummaging through your old parts for me. Now . . . hopefully I won't screw this one up. Howard

Howard, Glad to hear that Crane would send a new widget gratis. I was at a local surplus store (they are not an Army-Navy cammys and knives store) and saw electronic photo cell units similar to what 'fires' a electonic ignition. If I was any good at electronics, I'd be rubbing my hands together and building my own ignition systems..... Did I say replace all the hoses in your fuel system and carry a fire extinguisher in the car, a big one? Good luck, Fin

I already changed all the hoses, but I have to admit that the plastic lines in the tunnel worry (a/k/a scare the ***** out of) me at times . . . although that's probably a new thread. May take your advice about the fire extinguisher, though. Peace, Howard
