I saw a guy remove one with a telephone pole, but I don't think that is what you have in mind! I haven't had to remove a fender on a 914, but I would reccomend picking up a spot weld cutter and expose all the spot welds with a wire brush on a drill or angle grinder and start drilling with the spot weld cutter.

Front Assembly
Closely follow along the edges of the fender removing the spot welds with either a spot weld cutter or drill bit, some will be covered under seam sealer or undercoating. Try to only drill through the fender metal, big holes in the mounting lip of the car make it more difficult to weld the new piece on. Carefully pry the fender from the car looking for weld that you might have missed. Not too difficult, just very time consuming. Watch out for lead. There is a lot near the cowel. Be safe dont heat it up too much and inhale.
I would grind most of it off instead of drilling and spot welding. Grinding will leave the cleanest surface. Move along a few inches and grind the spot welds down, then skip a few inches and return after the metal cools. This will keep it from warping. You will have to use a spot weld removal tool in some spots that the grinder will not reach. Do the same for its replacement, cut a few extra inches from the donor and grind the excess off. It takes much more time to use the grinder but it will pay off when aligning the new one. I wager 10,000 quatloos its the right fender. ;-) [This message has been edited by Rich Hilgersom (edited 09-28-2000).] |

OK..I'm an idiot, but I can find the spot welds. I wire wheeled all around the front fender cowl seal and still can't find them. Are they on the upper wheel housing? I saw the ones inside the fender, just can't seem to find the ones on top. Thanks again!

Hey! Nice Rack! "Celette"

carefully remove the hood seal and look in the channel. As I think I remember, there are some blind spot welds you need to get to from under the wiper panel.(I think) Also use a small scrapper and a heat gun to remove the heavy seam sealer and sound deadening inside the wheel well.
