Pretty sure the bumper has to come off, or see if you can squeeze a wrench between the bumper and the valance. I think there are 4 or so bolts across the top of the valance along the bottom edge of the bumper.
If it is a 70-74 there are two nuts inside each fender under the turn signals to remove the bumper. If it os a 75-76 there are two large bolts (17mm I think) that are removed throught the two holes under the bumper behind the "bumperettes" or "nipples". Remove the two large bolts and wiggle the bumper off the shock absorbers, but leave the shocks attached to the car. [This message has been edited by JP Noonan (edited 10-04-2000).] |

Yes, the bumper has to come off first.

i have a special edition front spoiler on my car. i had to do something to it and had to take the front bumper off. on a 74, there are only 4 nuts & bolts holding the bumper on so it's not too difficult.

I removed the stock front valence on my 1974 without a problem...you don't have to remove the bumper. Remove the two small bolts on the ends (accessed through the front wheel wells); then remove three or four more screws from inside the front trunk. The screws are 8-mm jobs that are pretty close to the edge of the trunk floor. You have to remove the spare to get to them.
