Wonder what it is

After thinking I had a W series 1.7 liter in my 1971 914, I find out it isn't. While disassembling the top of the engine to replace intake runner hoses, I decided to remove the blower fan since the heat/defrost system has been removed. With the blower out of the way I found I have a GC engine code; which according to the Tuna Can web site is a 2.0 from 75-76. I definitely do not have the 3 stud 2.0 cylinder heads and I dohave a 1.7 d-jet fuel system.

So, I either have a low compression 2.0 with 1.7 fuel injection and some type of 4 stud intake heads (1.7 or 1.8) or my 1.7 was rebuilt some time ago using a GC series case. Is there a way to tell if my 1.7 was rebuilt using a GC case without, dissassembling the engine?

Tuna Cans web site has a good listing of cylinder heads by part number. If I could read the numbers that would help me come closer to figuring out what I have. Are the serial numbers on the cylinder heads visible with the engine in the car? If so from the top or the bottom? I am at a point where it appears I could easily remove the upper cooling tin. Would that reveal cylinder head numbers?

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Thanks, Don

There is a casting number on the heads inside but that won't tell you other than what it started out as.
My bet is its a 2.0L with 1800 heads because why would you change the crank and rods if you swapped in a different engine? Lots of times PO blow up a motor and then find a used one that needs topend work. Find some rebuild 1800 bus heads at the local VW store (they don't carry the 3 bolt heads) and off you go.
Met a guy who did just this and traded his 3 bolt heads in for a cheap core price too!

Well Geoff, that could explain why this engine seems slower than most 1.7's.

I noticed a GC code engine is rated at 88HP when equipped with the 2.0 914 heads and a d-jet system designed for a 2.0. So, with heads that do not flow as well as the originals and a fuel system form a 1.7, it probably produces less horsepwoer than the 80 of the W series 1.7.

On the bright side (assuming I have a 2.0 with 1.8 heads) when its time to go through this engine, a set of the correct heads, a 2.0 d-jet system and some higher compression pistons should get me 95 to 100 HP.

Time will tell, Don

The 914 2.0l pistons are 7.5 to 1 and the bus pistons are 7 to 1. Some people use the bus pistons cuz they are half the cost. You could be turning out a whopping 68hp like the 2.0l bus motors.
W code 1.7 motors were 80hp with 8.2 to 1 compression
