old 914's
hey guys
please bear with me: i drove porsches for several years, quit, and now am returning to the flock.. looking for a 914 to customize. and found two that are in great shape except they won't start and the owners don't know why or want to mess with them. one was stored for five years and was running, stored for two more, now won't start. i can't get good info on #2. so: is this a common prob with these guys? i was planning on redoing the engine anyway but i seem to see a lot of posts about bad starters can you provide any insight? thanks, from a reborn porschite.

The reliability of these cars is all about their condition. There are many 914s on the road that are daily drivers and totally reliable. Sounds like those two cars you are considering need alot of attention to revive them from neglect. Always buy the car in the best condition that you can afford...it is the least expensive and most fun in the long run. |

Nah, its not a bad starter but rather bad ground connections. Usually the tranny ground strap is a mess along with the battery connections.

Did you already buy the cars? If not, check out the 914 Buyers Guide and the 914 FAQs. If you already bought the cars, then I would suggest trying to figure out what mechanical condition the engines are in first. It's possible that the engine(s) died because of a seized bearing or a dropped valve seat or whatever so try to get as much info from the previous owners as possible. If you're convinced that the engines are basically mechanically sound, then adjust the valves and replace the fuel filter and add fresh gas and check that all the vacuum and fuel lines are good and connected correctly. There's a diagram around here somewhere that shows the correct vacuum and fuel line connections for a 2.0L motor. Make sure that all the electrical grounds are good and check that the ignition points are good and that you get spark at the plugs. Once you've determined that all of those things are ok you can use the fuel injection troubleshooting information on my web page to check out the individual f/i components and if you need more detailed info, look at Brad Anders' page.

Bozeman, MT huh? Me to.
I bought my project, for $600. It had 3 flat tires that were 3 different sizes, and only ran when you poured gas down the intake. Anyway, that was three years ago. Right now, I have the engine completly apart, and am hoping to get it back together for some auto cross events. I was looking for a project, and I probably got more then I bargained for. But hey, how else would I learn to rebuild an engine, and replace synchros in a transmission. By the way, or these stored cars in and around bozeman? If so I'd be interested in know about which ever one you don't buy. I'm not in the market (to musch $ tied up in the current 914) but its always fun to look.
