Which master cylinder to use? and V8 conversions
 

I am building the suspension, chassis and brakes on my 1972 914 before installing the V8. I have 1982 911 SC struts with 'A' calipers and have rebuilt the calipers and am using Ate's slotted rotors. Out back I am using BMW 320i calipers on stock rotors. I just installed a 19mm master cylinder. I have read that some people are moving up to the 23 mm Mercedes master. Do you think I need this for my setup? What are the effects if I don't upgrade? Will this brake package be impressive enough with the V8 power?

Any suggestions are appreciated...

When your attempting to shut down from a 100+ MPH burst is there ever enough brakes? I also read about the big pusher. Can Someone post part numbers for the Mercedes Master cylinder?

I have A calipers in the front for a 3.0 SC engine. On the track, the Gastrol Dot 4 non-synthetic got hot and vaporized. Now I am using the blue stuff. Works great http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif. Just my experience. Since you will have more HP and weight, I would run ducts to the rotors. IMHO

How much tire you got? It is silly and expensive to put monster brakes on a car with skinny tires. How fast you can lock up the brakes doesn't help. Unless you are running really wide tires the set up you have is fine.

Which conversion kit do you have? Are you happy with it? Quality brackets etc.? Any suggestions?

The 19mm M/C should push enough fluid. The 911 SC which used the A calipers had the 19mm one.

If you went to the 23mm one, you might find it difficult to push on the pedal hard enough to lock the brakes. Unless you could figure out some way to rig a booster in there.

I have installed a 23mm m/c after installing BMW calipers on the front and rear. The pedal was hard enough but the amount of travel was a little too much for my liking. Dave is correct, you do have to push harder with the 23mm as opposed to the 19mm but on my car there is only about 1/2 inch of travel before it gets solid. If you use the 23mm m/c you will also have to replace the steering rack suport with an alloy one.
