Buying a 914 -1.8
Hey guys - I've got a line on a 1975 914 1.8 I'm looking to buy and would like some feedback. Engine and tranny rebuilt 10K ago, minor interior work needed (carpet), mileage unknown (odometer broken), medium size dent in the front right quarter panel, decent paint, needs rubber (tires and weatherstriping). The guy wanted $3500 but is willing to deal for less, probably $2000 - $2500. Does this sound like a reasonable deal?

That's high in CA...but since you are in an area that does not have a lot of 914s....make him an offer for less....see what he says....but I would look really close for rust.
There are buying guides on line for the 914.... |

Watch the Rust and check out the buyers guide
on this Website. Contact your local PCA and see if someone in the club that knows 914's can look at the car. Watch the RUST |

sounds very similar to the one I bought in Hayward CA about 5 years ago. But no eng/trans rebuild. 1975 1.8 with 58,000 miles, intact, complete and very reliable FI. Very rust free, especially under the battery area. I paid $1800 and now have over $6000 it the car. He was asking $2200 I believe. Turns out the seller bought less than a year before for $600, go figure. My fist 914 was a very rusty (with a shiny paint job-never judge a book by it's cover) $3400 Hawaii car so $1800 was a steal to me. Hope this helps. Remember, 914s are so old now and semi collectable so there is no general price rules. Look at the car and estimate what it will cost to get it where you want it. Then compare that cost to buying one already where you want it.
