MELLING oil pump

Bought the MELLING , for my rebuild from Pelican. Tried to put the case together , BUT when I tighten the oil pump cover fully , the engine doesn´t rotate freely. It is stuck....

Open the top cover , it turns.Did the grinding on the tap before too , as was instructed on PP board.

Should there be a "rubber O ring" under the top cover ? As there is this round groove , on the pump body itself. But the pump only came with 2 paper gaskets , one between the pump and case , the other between pump and pump cover.

I have to take it out anyway , I have to test if it turns while out from the engine , even if I tighten the cover. I was too tired to do it yesterday....

If you changed CAm gears it may be hitting the bolts that hold the CAM gear to the CAM shaft.

If you changed the cam gear make SURE the bolts are properly staked and/or Loctited. If they back out even a very small amount you'll end up with a lot of loose metal particals in the engine when they hit the oil pump. Damn PO's Builder.....

CAM ?

The cam is a "newish" item from WEB CAM...

I did not even think about the possibility of the cam touching..... Have to check that !

Naturally I immediately thought it MUST be the new pump....

ANy ideas of that seal (or no seal ) under that top cover ?

If you used the old stock gear and new bolts to attach it, thats the problem. WEB countersinks the gear were the bolts go. Stock gears have to be countersunk to use bolts.

Pump has a "thin" paper gasket under its cover and a paper gasket between it and the engine case.

Eki,

I am also running a 30 mm Melling. Since I added the Accusump, and a 25 row Mocal external oil coller w/larger lines. The oil pump does a good job of moving oil flow. Uh, too good actually. Oil starvation occured when hard cornering (long fwy offramps). 2nd rebuild, we modified the windage tray (dilled holes), no problems any longer. Wish we would have done this the first time...
