I replaced my cable 2 months ago and had similar problems. I too got the damn thing stuck. It took forever, but all I did was to slightly twist (not too much or the strands might break) and jab the cable into the tube. While dismantling my 72 parts car I was able to remove the speedo cable and clutch cable, but the accel cable jammed in the tube and belive me I couldn't get it out (toward the end I just didn't care and tried vise grips and all my stregth and still the sucker wouldn't come out, it broke). I have no idea as to why the cable is such a pain, except that the tube bends close to the bottom of the floor pan in the tunnel. On my freinds 75, while taking out the old pans, we saw that both the clutch and accel tube were rusted through to the cable at that bend. Or it may be bumping into some part of the shift linkage? Just hang in there it took me about a frigging hour and a half.
