Stereo mods?
I was wondering if anyone has ideas for stereo mods to my car w/o having to cut the doors? My car has 4" in the stock locations, I was planing on replacing w/ 5 1/4" and maybe put the 4" under the dash. Any ideas for bass? Thanks.
PS: Anyone know a good 914 mechanic in the Fairfax, VA area? |

Pioneer makes a bass tube that will fit in front of the passenger seat. Comes in black, like my interior. Very hard to notice unless you look closeley.

I put a sub box in the front trunk, it is about 16x16 inches. Inside is a 10" woofer with a 100 watt amp. For the inside I have a EQ setup running oval speakers in the stock locations. Sounds good, and if I want I can turn up the bass for some glass rattling thumping sound!

I used a Polk component setup with the 5 1/4 woofers in the doors and the mid-tweeters in the factory kick panel grilles. Then I put a 6 1/2 bazooka ex bass tube in the passenger footwell, and run it all from a Sony CD head unit and a Fosgate amp in the front trunk which is bridged to 3 channels (about 35W to each side and 70 to the sub).

I built some pods that angle my speaker doors up and back a little. 5.25 inch speakers fit in them quit well, and i didn't have to cut the doors at all.

I too am in the process of installing a stereo system into my 914. "Base Tubes" can sound good, but you can't integrate them into the styling of the interior. There are a few companies who make 10" and 12" sub woofers that need only .3 to .5 cubic feet of air. The sub I am going to buy is made by Alumapro (www.alumapro.com). After buying the woofer, I am going to fabricate a center consol what will double as a woofer enclosure.
I am using a set of kick panels that Dug Wright handcrafted that mount to using the stock speaker panel screw holes. They allow me to use 6-1/2" mid's without cutting up the door panel. Plus, the stereo imaging is great from the stock speaker locations. I'll be keeping a photo journal of my progress once I start at www.roadglue.com. -- Randy Wentzel |
