Front 1984-911 Carrera strut

Hi, i am about to swap my stock 914 front strut assy. for a 1984 911 Carrera one, from which the ball joints are missing.

Are my stock 914 (in good condition) ball joints can be used ?

The 1972 and earlier ball joints had a different retaining method to the strut than the 1973 and later ones (which is the type used by the 911 struts). I don't like to waste money, but if I'm overhauling the complete front end, new ball joints are not that expensive, it would seem like a wise idea to replace them too.
