Dumb question

I just saw an auction on Ebay for gaskets. these are ,I guess, for use when changing your oil.

Ok the question; Does an oil change on a 914 require the replacement of gaskets?

What if I changed the oil and didn't know about that?

Hmmmm...

Volkswagen has been so nice as to give us access to the oil pick-up strainer. Next to the drain plug there is a 3-4 in. dia cover plate that holds the strainer. Checking it is not nessary due to the fact that the majority of other engines out there do not give you this access. In addition, the type IV engine has an oil filter, unlike the type I. I believe this is just a carry over from the days of nondetergent oil and sluge problems. Checking it from time to time doesn't hurt either, just be careful not to over tighten the retaining nut. The pickup is attatched to the center cam journal boss and over torque could result in cam failure.

I know roadtrip mentioned it, but it's worthy of mentioning again. Do NOT over torque the strainer cover nut.

The aluminium crush washers can be re-used a few times but the gaskets must be changed every time they come off. Also make sure the metal surfaces the gasket adhear to are perfectly clean and not gouged. I personally only clean the stainer basket every third ot fourth oil change.
