Synchro Issues

I'm looking at a 914 I found on craigslist, and the owner says that the transmission has synchro issues in first and reverse. How hard is this to fix, and how much would it cost?

Its not hard to fix, just pull off the rear tranny cover. Simple to replace the 1st/reverse synchro, but usually its also the slider and 1st dog teeth. Those are couple of hundred dollars these days for new ones.

Reverse doesn't have a synchro.

Yup no reverse synchro. 1st gear synchro is pretty easy to change. and as mentioned 1st gear slider goes for like 400 and the dogg teeth are pretty spendy also.

HOWEVER. I don't think that really is the problem. More than likely you need new shift bushings and then re-evaluate the synchro issue. it is amazing what an oil change will do also.

BUT if you find you need expensive parts I can hook you up with good used that will shift very nicely.

I agree with Joe.

When I replaced my clutch, I suddenly developed 1st & reverse problems. It turned out that I needed to adjust the shifter where the bottom of the shifter clamps on to the shaft.

I had replaced all of my bushings at the same time as the clutch an so things must have gotten out of adjustment. After a little adjusting, everything worked fine.

Also, don't use synthetic gear oil. 914's have trouble with that as it is too slick.

Idont know how much just the 1st gear syncro is installed. But replacing all the bearings and syncros new seals and machining the center plate to install bushings for the shift rods is about $1400.00 if you hand them the transmission. But it now shifts firm and no crunching on the down shift.
