Check with a VDO dealer but I seem to remember a test procedure for VDO gauges. Something like hooking up the +12V and ground, then grounding the tach/coil lead. The tach should go up to max and then drop to zero smoothly. I think mine went up to max then down to about 2000 then back up to max then down to zero. It has the classic bounce but otherwise works. Also check the relay board connections, the black/purple stripe tach wire goes through the board. Try hooking up the tach directly to the batt. and coil with jumper wire. This would rule out the wire harness and tell you that the tach is the problem. Don't forget to ask a VDO dealer before testing your tach as it is delicate, and I would hate to see you blow it out. The procedure is described in the back of the VDO catalog.

couple of things:
- We had trouble with our car not reving past 4000 or so so I hooked a test-tach to the distributor after checking it for accuracy and the 914 tach was right. - Second, where can you get a VDO catalog? |

Sorry, my brain was asleep when I wrote the last, I found VDO by using the following link:
http://www.performancemarket.com/contents.htm and their phone number is 1-540-665-2428 if anyone is interested. |
