Cig. lighter

What holds the damn thing in?

I am trying to get my lower dash upholstery off and the lighter is stopping the metal it's bonded to from coming off.

Never pulled the my 914 one, but 911 one has a unit that screws in from the outside....remove the lighter element.

Disconnect the battery or pull the cigarette fuse and then stuff the end of a screwdriver in the hole...twist counter-clockwise and that part pulls out in your hand with a dead/hot lead attached. Disconnect that lead and then the part behind the dash falls out...

It is held in with a type of snap ring - basically a very thin washer that is a touch to small for the diameter of the lighter socket. I removed mine by pushing the lighter socket out from behind the dash while gently rocking it up and down and from side to side. Take your time, it will loosen up. Installation is much easier than removal.
