901 trans failure

I can't engage any of my gears! I was going from 4th to 5th gear when I realized there was no gear to go into. Tried shifting into 4th gear, but no 4th gear either. I suspect the pin that holds the shift lever (to the shift rod has either sheared/fallen off. Is this a common? When this occured,I heard no noises/grinding coming from the trans indicating a major failure. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks

Easiest to check is the shift coupler at the shift lever, you can look through the opening just behind the shift lever to see if the rod is still moving and the pinch bolt is tight? If okay, next you will have to pull the cover from where the shift linkage goes into the trans and then have some one move the shift lever to see of the shaft going into the trans is rotating and moving back and forth. You don't have to jack up the car to do this. You can also check to see if the set screw at the trans connection has failed or come loose or if the cup bushing has broken and preventing shifting. You can also feel the forward coupling to se if it is tight. If all the external connections are tight then the pin inside the trans may have broken and can be fixed by jacking the car high on the left side and pulling the side cover. Good luck .

Thanks John,I'll give a try. The whole shift rod from the shift lever in the car is intact and all the couplers/nuts are tight. I'll pull the inspection plate just beneath the shift lever and hope I find the pin or at least part of it. Thanks again,I'll be working on it 01-04-00. I'll let you all know what came of it.

Wish me Luck,
John
