Engine rebuild

I have a 71 1.7 and a 74 1.8. I am in the process of restoring the 74. The motor has a 2 barrel carb. Would it be best to buy another motor 2.0 with FI to rebuild or do the 1.8 and leave the 2 barrel. I plan to drive this for pleasure only but I want it to be right. Any ideas would be appreciated.

It depends on your definition of "restoration" and "right".

If it were me I'd 'restore' the 74 to the original 1.8L specs, and swap the carb for the original FI. Anything else would not be 'right'.

I'd go the 2.0L engine implant in the 74 for pleasure. There is lots more pleasure driving around a 2.0L w/FI than a 1.8 w/ 2bbl carb. The smile will be on your face everytime you drive it!
