brakes

my brake pedal is extremely stiff and only has about an inch of travel, also when my brother and i pushed the car (76 914 1.8) it was way too hard. any ideas on the cause?

Seized calipers? or swelled brake hoses. I would at least inspect the hoses and if of unknown age change them.

Was your parking brake recently adjusted/rear pads changed? It might be too tight.

Has any work been done recently or has the car been sitting a long time? If a brake job was done then the venting clearance could be too tight. If the car has been sitting, dirt and rust can cause sticking. I would jack one side of the car up and turn the front then the rear wheels to see if they turn freely. There can be some drag, but it should be minimal. Make sure the parking brake lever is full down and not caught on anything and the car is out of gear. You can watch the rear wheel e-brake lever while someone pulls the front lever up to see if it moves freely. Try the other side the same way and see if it is one wheel or more. If the e-brake seems to be the cause, there is an adjustment on each cable to loosen or tighten the free play. Good luck.
