914-6 C.V. Joints

I am in the process of changing a C.V. joint on my 914-6 and have been forced to consider replacing the worn C.V. joint with one from a 914-4. Apparently, Lobro is no longer manufacturing the C.V. joint for the 914-6s. I disassembled the 914-6 joint and a 914-4 joint and noticed hardly any difference between them. The inner race - splines - are larger on the 914-6 joint, but the rest of the parts of the joints including the balls and cages seem identical. I even assembled a joint using the inner race from the 914-6 joint, and the rest of the parts from the 914-4 joint. I see no difference in the apparent thickness or strength of the remaining parts from either C.V. joint. Any thoughts from other 914ers about the interchangeability of these C.V. parts?

I have a 914/6 and can't see why the 4 CV joints would not be OK for modest HP levels in the 911 engine. If your CV joints are just worn, you could flip them over to try to get the other side of the mating surfaces to be under load in the forward driving direction. I noticed that the 911 flanges are larger than the 914, although the gearbox is basically the same. The 914/4 could get nearly the same HP as the stock 6.
Good luck, Bryan

Upon further study, I realized that all of the parts of the 914-4 CV joints are smaller
than those of the 914-6 CV joints, so the parts are not interchangeable. And, of course, we already know that a 914-4 CV will not fit onto the Lobro 914-6 axle.

Have you had a look at very early 911 cv joint`s. They were 90 mm in diameter like the 914. Since the 6 cylinder cars were assembled next to the911`s, it makes sense that the factory would have used the same shaft.
Hope this helps.
