Question Rust repair guesstimate

Found a '72 for sale in North Carolina. Car has been in NC it's entire life. Seller tells me battery tray is gone and frame near the jack port is not great. Otherwise car has no major rust. I guess the battery acid thing did it. Any opinions on cost incl labor to replace this area with new metal parts? What pieces would I need besides the battery tray and support?
Thanks for all replies. I should probably run away from this one.

If you don't love bracing, cutting, and welding... yes you should probably run away.

If this much damage is disclosed up front, the extent is much worse, and is not worth the repair cost if you were to hire it out.

That being said... My car was like this. I got it cheap and enjoyed the process of repairing the structural damage.

At any rate, you need to check carefully for flex to find out where it's at...

Take the top off, roll the window down... At the passenger side, note door gap at the top. Face the rear of the car, straddle the door, all your weight on your right foot on the frame rail, bounce.... and observe the door gap at the top. Does it change? If you can see it, your in for a LOT of work. If you put your thumb over the gap, can you feel it change?

If the gap is nice and uniform all the way around the back of the door, even during this test, then the damage may not be as extensive as I fear.

Good luck... let us know!

Plus the engine shelf, inner wheelhouse, clamshell, jack mount and about $1500-2000 to weld and fit it in. If you do it yourself maybe $700 in parts.

Thumbs up

Thanks to both of you for the advice. Maybe that's why he only wants $1000 for the car. I was/am looking for a project car, but maybe not this much. Thanks again.

How is the rest of the car? Are the trunks all rusty? Is the interior in nice shape? How does the motor run, still have FI?
If the car is in poor shape generally forgit it!
If its a nice car but has just the battery leak induced rust then think about it.
